Welcome!

Everyone knows Shakespeare in the Park, but what about opera in the Amazon?

As I kayaked down Vermont's beautiful Lake St. Catherine, enjoying that precious moment of solitude a working mom rarely finds, I thought about combining my two passions: for culture – I’m a Juilliard-trained classical flutist, with wanderlust – who's always in quest of undiscovered natural beauty off the beaten tourist track.  Musicians may not be the highest earners, but we often have a bird's eye view of some of those unexpected treasures in faraway places and around the corner. Thus begat this blog.

And yes, I've performed at Teatro Amazonas, a world-famous opera house in Manaus, right in the Brazilian rainforest.

Join me on my cultural odyssey and please share your hidden treasures. We'll keep them our secret!

  1. Now your picture remind me of a scenery, Mt. Kinabalu, near a place I lived for twelve years. The mountain is absolutely beautiful and one can climb it (it takes two days). Though it's located in the humid tropical climate, you need to wear ski suits to climb to the freezing cold top of 13,435 feet (4,095 m). I've brought my two older boys to the top when they are 10 years old. A great climbing experience. A great place to see sea and mountain: Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

  4. I want to let travelers to India know about an incredible festival in Mumbai, India. It is Zakir Hussain's BARCI memorial festival in honor of his father, the master tabla player who played with Ravi Shankar. I was there for it on February 3, 2012 and it happens yearly around that time. Zakir, himself the most exciting and extraordinary tabla player, is there organizing it and performing as well. The masters of Indian classical music appear in this festival which began ca. 7 AM with a song, conch shell and gongs. Master sarongi, sitar, tabla, stick drummer, harmonium, singers from all over India performed to a completely full hall. If one has the good fortune to be there in the best weather months of January and February, this is an event not to be missed.

    1. Thanks for sharing news about such an amazing festival. For those who aren't familiar with Katrina Krimsky, she is an extraordinary classical pianist/composer and has collaborated with leading Indian musicians. At some point CPE will feature music from this part of the world - it makes Western classical music look very young!
